Eleventh Annual Market Monitoring Report published
IRG-Rail has published its Eleventh Annual Market Monitoring Report. This Report covers the rail market developments in 31 European countries and the European level in 2021.
The Eleventh Annual Market Monitoring report consists of two documents: the Main Report, which presents overall results at the European level and the Working Document, which provides country-specific details as well as data used to build graphics. All documents can be found here.
The Report provides an annual overview of market developments and economic conditions in the railway sector and allows comparison over time regarding the development and competitiveness within the railway market. Each Market Monitoring Report focuses on one or several subjects. This year, the report concentrates on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the European rail market in 2021: Compared to the pre-COVID year 2019, Passenger-km fell by -41% despite a comparably small decline in supply (-4% for train-km). For freight services, a small decline of train-km (-0.2%) was observed, while the volume of freight moved (tonne-km) increased by 1%.
IRG-Rail has been publishing Annual Market Monitoring Reports, prepared by its Market Monitoring Working Group, since 2013 and collects the data from its members.
